Yes, I spelled it correctly – Higher from Within.  This business rule is about setting expectations in our organizations, but also, about attracting the right people in our businesses.  Often time we look at a set of credentials, the keywords, the triggers for hiring new people into our organizations.  This can create a disconnect between what we are truly looking for, and who we attract.

Besides the basic skills needed to perform a job – candidates should have a few qualities that we look for.  Integrity, Self-Starter, Dedication to Excellence, Creativity, and Credibility.  These “non-standard” qualifications are often hard to quantify, you can see the word on a resume, and still not have it be true in the person.  But these are the higher standards you want in a new person on your team.

When strategizing with my clients, I have them define words like these in our planning sessions, by asking questions like – What does a person of integrity look like?  What words do they use?  How do they carry themselves?  How do they dress?  What do they talk about?  Once you have identified for yourself what these qualities look, feel, hear and smell like – it becomes easier to attract those types of people into your organization.
